Second Sunday Snacks

October 11, 2015 @ 11:15 am - 12:15 pm

Here at Lakewood UCC, we use the word “Fellowship” to refer to the coffee-and-snacks hour following Sunday worship. It’s a much-loved tradition, and we hope we’ll still be munching on cookies and chatting with each other 50 years from now. Our system for who provides those cookies, however, and how and when they do it, is changing. Starting Sunday, September 6, you’ll no longer see a clipboard on the Narthex asking people to sign up to host Fellowship. Instead, we’re introducing something we call “Second Sunday Snacks.” What this means is that on the second Sunday of each month, a Board, Committee, or other church group will host Fellowship. If you’re part of that group, be creative! Theme the snacks you bring! Celebrate a special occasion! Or just make something up! The other Sundays of the month, coffee and lemonade will be served. To sign up your group, please contact Gwen Rush.

World Communion Sunday

October 4, 10:15 a.m.

“The way God designed our bodies is a model for understanding our lives together as a church: every part dependent on every other part, the parts we mention and the parts we don’t, the parts we see and the parts we don’t. If one part hurts, every other part is involved in the hurt, and in the healing.”
from 1 Corinthians 12:25-31 (The Message)

We use the word “church” to mean a lot of different things. Sometimes “church” is a building. Sometimes it’s the people who meet in that building and the stuff they do together. Sometimes it refers to a local congregation, like Lakewood UCC. And sometimes it refers to a whole bunch of congregations joined by common history or theology. So, the United Church of Christ is a “church”—it says so, right there in the name! These are all useful ways to talk about “church,” but there’s a bigger meaning of the word, and that’s the meaning behind this Sunday’s worship service. Join us as we, together with Christians all over the world, celebrate the unity of the global Church.

Neighbors in Need is a special mission offering of the UCC that supports ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. One-third of NIN funds support the Council for American Indian Ministry, while two-thirds are used by the UCC’s Justice and Witness Ministries to support a variety of justice initiatives, advocacy efforts, and grants for direct service projects. We’ll receive our congregation’s NIN offering on World Communion Sunday, but you can donate online anytime by clicking here.

Please take a few minutes to fill out the interest/volunteer form you’ll find in your church Bulletin this Sunday, then drop it off at the Christian Education table in the Narthex. OR, if you’d prefer to print your own form and fill it out at home, you can find a digital version here. Contact: Jodi Bushdiecker.
