As noted in the August Beacon newsletter, Sunday, August 20 will be Anne Rowland’s last Sunday with us. We are collecting money to give as a thank you gift. If you’ve been touched by Anne’s music and would like to contribute, checks can be made payable to Lakewood UCC with “Anne Rowland” on the memo line.

“Shortly before dawn, Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake.” Matthew 14:22-33
In challenging times we find ourselves losing faith, wondering if things will ever be right again if we are strong enough to weather the storm. We want evidence of God’s power in the world. We begin to hope for a spectacular event in which God will turn all hatred into love and right all wrongs. This week Dr. Nadyne Guzmán will explore this very real desire and take time to regard the ordinary so we can find ourselves empowered to be the change we seek.
On August 13 we will have a special time during the service to recognize all those students in our community who are about to embark on a new academic year of growth and learning. We are inviting students of all ages to come to the service on this day so we can present them with a blessing and a gift for the year to come.

“Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with humans and have overcome.” from Genesis 32: 22-31
What would you ask for if you could ask God for one thing? Fame? Fortune? Good health? A long life? In Sunday’s story from the book of Genesis, Jacob wrestles with an angel of God all night long. Jacob won’t let the angel go until he gets what he wants. What he asks for (and receives) is something as life changing as it is simple. Join us this Sunday for worship as Pastor Curt preaches on wrestling with God and the blessings that come with not giving up.
Sunday, July 30, 10:15 am
“The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed into about sixty pounds of flour until it worked all through the dough.” from Matthew 13:33, 44
The parables of Jesus are some of the most well known and most beloved verses in scripture. Many are a comparison between ordinary, everyday items and complicated theological ideas. This Sunday, through three short parables, we hear a bit of what Jesus believes the kingdom is heaven is like. To what would you compare the kingdom of heaven? Jesus’s answers might surprise you.
More details to be announced. Please check back in the future.

Summer tends to be the sleepy season at Lakewood UCC. School lets out, people go on vacation, and church activities shift down a gear. Everything just moves a little slower. Aaah. Hopefully by now though, everyone’s feeling rested and eager to get going again. We’ll kick off our Fall season on September 10 with our choirs back in action and a celebratory potluck after the service. You don’t need to sign up—just bring whatever you fancy. Our youth group, YAC, will have its own kick-off the following week. More information on that to come!
