It’s a busy world. Our culture values efficiency over almost all else. In a world where time is often the most valuable thing we have, how do we spend it? What if we “waste” it? Can we really save it? God commands us to rest on the Sabbath but few of us really do. What does keeping Sabbath look like for busy 21st Century Christians? Join us for worship this Sunday when Pastor Curt preaches on the 10 Commandments and our need to find rest.

Sunday, October 1, 10:15 am

World Communion Sunday offers us a distinctive opportunity to experience Holy Communion in the context of the global community of faith. The first Sunday of October has become a time when Christians in every culture break bread and pour the cup to remember and affirm Christ as the Head of the Church. On this day, we remember that we are part of the whole body of believers. Whether shared in a grand cathedral, a mud hut, outside on a hilltop, in a meetinghouse, or in a storefront, Christians celebrate the communion liturgy in as many ways as there are congregations.

“For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” from 2 Corinthians 3:17-4:2
We will hear stories, see pictures, and celebrate the generosity of this congregation for all their support of those who went on the Pine Ridge mission trip in July. As one volunteer put it: “Volunteering at Re-Member is truly life-changing. Getting to serve the Lakota people and learn about their culture first hand is a privilege that I will forever be grateful for.”

Blessings to you two...

October 7, 10:00 a.m.

The feast of St. Francis, the patron saint of animals and the poor, is held on October 4. The Care For Creation ministry at Lakewood UCC would like to invite the congregation to a celebration of St. Francis’s care for animals.  On Saturday, October 7, Pastor Curt will be Blessing the Animals in our lives who are our companions or sustain us in one form or another. The invitation is to bring your dogs, cats, rodents, chickens, bees, fish, hedgehogs, reptiles, etc. to be blessed for the work they do and to honor the special relationship between God and all of God’s creatures. If your pet does not play well with others, please feel free to bring a photo to be blessed in their place.

This Sunday in Worship – Mental Health Awareness Ministry Sunday!

Sunday, September 17, 10:15 am

Jesus prays, “Holy Father, protect in them your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one.” Our hope in times of illness is always to be whole, either again or in the future, even sometimes with God. This is most certainly true in mental illness when perception and body are fractured in biologically based challenges. This Sunday we’ll support and encourage those living with mental illness by diving into Jesus’ prayer for us and hearing from those who have first-hand experience of hope and mental illness.

“But Moses said to God, ‘Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?'” from Exodus 3:1-15
Moses didn’t want the job that God was offering. He didn’t want to go back to Egypt and he didn’t want to have to stand up to Pharaoh. And the truth is he wasn’t really qualified anyway. But God wasn’t taking “no” for an answer. Join us this Sunday as Pastor Curt preaches on burning brightly without burning out and what we can do when God won’t take “no” for an answer.

Harvest Table

We will again be providing a place for people to bring their extra produce so that it can be shared with others. On Sundays, we’ll have a card table set-up with a sign that reads, “Harvest Table.” If you’ve got extra zucchini, tomatoes, kale or whatever, leave it on the table. If you see something you’d like, take it home with you. If you’d like to make a donation, all money collected will go to the Action Center. This is just a small way of reminding ourselves of God’s abundance and our ability to share what we have with one another.
