SUMMARY:Giving With Grocery Cards
DESCRIPTION:Remember\, the First Sunday of every month we will be selling grocery cards. King Soopers and Safeway cards cost $10. You decide how much to put on the card\, they are rechargeable\, so once you develop the habit it is easy to use them. Sprouts cards are one-time use and come in denominations of $25\, $50 and $100. Lakewood UCC will receive 5% cash back on all purchases made with these cards. Our goal is to get as many families as possible using the cards\, so we will have a surplus of funds at the end of the year. We hope to have a bonus for Curt and who knows – if we do this right maybe all of our dedicated staff. Happy Shopping!

SUMMARY:Tenebrae Service and Communion
DESCRIPTION:On Holy Thursday\, sometimes called “Maundy Thursday\,” we recall the Last Supper\, as well as the betrayal and arrest of Jesus. The word “Maundy” is rooted in the Latin word “mandatum” which means: “to give\, to entrust\, to order.” According to John’s gospel\, on the night of the last supper\, Jesus gives his disciples a commandment: “that you love one another; even as I have loved you\, you also ought to love one another” (John 13:34).\n\nTenebrae means “Service of Shadows”\, and is marked by 12 readings of scripture by candle light and punctuated with music. After each reading\, one candle is extinguished and the sanctuary becomes progressively darker\, concluding with complete darkness. This is often regarded as one of the most powerful worship services of the year. The Frugal Meal and Worship are each a separate event\, so feel free to come to one or both of these offerings.

DESCRIPTION:We meet for worship every Sunday at 10:15 am\, and we’d love it if you stopped by and joined us. You can park in the large west lot on Carr Street or the smaller east lot on Brentwood Avenue. Street parking is also available. Please enter through the main doors on 1st Avenue. When you come in\, a welcomer will greet you and answer any questions you might have.\n\nPeople usually arrive a little early and hang out in the lobby inside the front doors until about 10:10 a.m. Then they pick up a worship bulletin at the Sanctuary doors\, go in\, and sit wherever they want. The service lasts for about an hour\, and includes a welcome\, announcements\, prayers\, songs\, Bible readings\, and a sermon. Our worship tends to feel casual and traditional at the same time\, with music that ranges from classic hymns to gospel\, folk\, and contemporary. If you want to\, you’ll have a chance to greet the people sitting around you\, share your joys and concerns\, and give to the work of the church.

DESCRIPTION:After all the great conversations at the 2017 Women’s Retreat\, we talked about starting a book club. Well\, we have chosen a book and a date for the first meeting! The booked we picked is by Brené Brown and it’s called Braving the Wilderness. Brown is a research professor at the University of Houston. She has spent the past sixteen years studying courage\, vulnerability\, empathy\, and shame\, and is the author of four books: The Gifts of Imperfection\, Daring Greatly\, Rising Strong\, and Braving the Wilderness. This event is not at the Action Center\, but at Dennison Elementary.\n\n \n\nIf you would like to carpool\, meet at Lakewood UCC at 1:00. Otherwise\, all volunteers will park at Dennison Elementary\, located behind the Jeffco Stadium. You will NOT be able to access parking from the Distribution entrance on Kipling.\n\n \n\nDirections To Event and Parking:\n\n-Take Garrison Street south from Hwy 6 or north from Alameda\n\n-Turn west on 4th Ave\n\n-Follow signs to volunteer parking.\n\n-Dennison Elementary 401 Independence Street\, Lakewood\, 80226\n\n-Follow signs to volunteer sign-in\, in the cafeteria of Dennison Elementary School.  You will sign in\, make your name tag\, and join a quick volunteer orientation\, where you will meet your Team Leader.\n\n \n\nWhat to bring:\n\n-WE WILL BE OUTSIDE\, rain\, shine or snow!  Dress for winter conditions including warm layers\, jacket\, gloves\, and hat.\n\nFun costumes\, Bronco’s colors and Thanksgiving gear welcome!\n\n-Water bottle and snacks\n\n-Comfortable closed-toe shoes\n\n-A toy donation for our Santa Shop if you are able to!
