SUMMARY:Tenebrae Service and Communion
DESCRIPTION:On Holy Thursday\, sometimes called “Maundy Thursday\,” we recall the Last Supper\, as well as the betrayal and arrest of Jesus. The word “Maundy” is rooted in the Latin word “mandatum” which means: “to give\, to entrust\, to order.” According to John’s gospel\, on the night of the last supper\, Jesus gives his disciples a commandment: “that you love one another; even as I have loved you\, you also ought to love one another” (John 13:34).\n\nTenebrae means “Service of Shadows”\, and is marked by 12 readings of scripture by candle light and punctuated with music. After each reading\, one candle is extinguished and the sanctuary becomes progressively darker\, concluding with complete darkness. This is often regarded as one of the most powerful worship services of the year. The Frugal Meal and Worship are each a separate event\, so feel free to come to one or both of these offerings.

DESCRIPTION:We meet for worship every Sunday at 10:15 am\, and we’d love it if you stopped by and joined us. You can park in the large west lot on Carr Street or the smaller east lot on Brentwood Avenue. Street parking is also available. Please enter through the main doors on 1st Avenue. When you come in\, a welcomer will greet you and answer any questions you might have.\n\nPeople usually arrive a little early and hang out in the lobby inside the front doors until about 10:10 a.m. Then they pick up a worship bulletin at the Sanctuary doors\, go in\, and sit wherever they want. The service lasts for about an hour\, and includes a welcome\, announcements\, prayers\, songs\, Bible readings\, and a sermon. Our worship tends to feel casual and traditional at the same time\, with music that ranges from classic hymns to gospel\, folk\, and contemporary. If you want to\, you’ll have a chance to greet the people sitting around you\, share your joys and concerns\, and give to the work of the church.

Marcus Borg’s 2014 book\, Convictions: How I Learned What Matters Most has been called “a manifesto for all progressive Christians who seek the best path for following Jesus today.” Borg is a world-renowned theologian and author of more than a dozen books.  For five Tuesday evenings beginning February 20\, we’ll explore what it means to live our convictions as progressive Christians. Chapter titles include: Faith is a Journey\, Salvation Is More About This Life than an Afterlife\, Jesus is the Norm of the Bible\, and Christians are Called to Peace and Nonviolence. DESCRIPTION:This Sunday from 1:30-4:45 Lakewood UCC will be partnering with the Action Center to provide holiday meals for families in need. This event is not at the Action Center\, but at Dennison Elementary.\n\n \n\nIf you would like to carpool\, meet at Lakewood UCC at 1:00. Otherwise\, all volunteers will park at Dennison Elementary\, located behind the Jeffco Stadium. You will NOT be able to access parking from the Distribution entrance on Kipling.\n\n \n\nDirections To Event and Parking:\n\n-Take Garrison Street south from Hwy 6 or north from Alameda\n\n-Turn west on 4th Ave\n\n-Follow signs to volunteer parking.\n\n-Dennison Elementary 401 Independence Street\, Lakewood\, 80226\n\n-Follow signs to volunteer sign-in\, in the cafeteria of Dennison Elementary School.  You will sign in\, make your name tag\, and join a quick volunteer orientation\, where you will meet your Team Leader.\n\n \n\nWhat to bring:\n\n-WE WILL BE OUTSIDE\, rain\, shine or snow!  Dress for winter conditions including warm layers\, jacket\, gloves\, and hat.\n\nFun costumes\, Bronco’s colors and Thanksgiving gear welcome!\n\n-Water bottle and snacks\n\n-Comfortable closed-toe shoes\n\n-A toy donation for our Santa Shop if you are able to! (they especially need toys for kids age 8-12: remote control cars\, makeup and craft kits\, sports equipment etc.)\n\n \n\nThe Action Center is asking that all participants be at least 15 years old.\n\n \n\nPlease email Logan (loganleebennett@gmail.com) as soon as possible if you plan to attend.

DESCRIPTION:As part of our work with the Lakewood Faith Coalition\, your Mission\, Outreach\, and Evangelism board is starting to develop a relationship with Deane Elementary School\, a Title 1 school in Lakewood. Of the many things Deane Elementary provides to its students and families is access to a food pantry. As our first effort to help Deane Elementary\, its students\, and their families\, we will be collecting donations for their food pantry on November 19 and 26. Items they are requesting include:\n\n 	Whole grain cereal\, like Raisin Bran\, Honey Nut Cheerios\, Granola\, etc.\n 	Creamy peanut butter\n 	One-minute rice\n 	Ranch dressing\n 	Buttermilk or similar pancake mix boxes\n\nIf you would like to donate to this cause\, please bring your donation to the church on one of those Sundays. There will be a collection box in the fellowship hall. Please consider donating to this school in need. Remember\, no donation is too small!
