Summer Film Series

July 12, 2018 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

An event every week that begins at 6:30 pm on Thursday, repeating until July 26, 2018

July 12: Sister Act (PG)
This 1992 film starring Whoopi Goldberg tells the story of Deloris Van Cartier, a Reno lounge singer, who witnesses a murder and must be hidden in a convent under a witness protection program. She immediately clashes with Mother Superior and the rules of the convent. She finds friends and solace leading the church’s choir. This heartwarming “fish out of water” comedy will have you singing along and wondering what kind of music is at the heart of authentic worship.

July 19: Songcatcher (PG-13)
Winner of a Special Jury Prize at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival, Songcatcher tells the story of Doctor Lily Penleric, a brilliant musicologist, who after being denied a promotion at the university where she teaches, impulsively visits her sister in Appalachia. There she stumbles upon the discovery of her life – a treasure trove of ancient Scots-Irish ballads, songs that have been handed down from generation to generation, preserved intact by the seclusion of the mountains. With the goal of securing her promotion, Lily ventures into the most isolated areas of the mountains to collect the songs and finds herself increasingly enchanted – not only by the rugged purity of the music, but also by the raw courage and endurance of the local people as they carve out meaningful lives against the harshest conditions.

July 26: Amazing Grace (PG)
Behind the song you love is a story you will never forget. This 2006 film takes place in 1797, where William Wilberforce, the great crusader for the British abolition of slavery, is taking a vacation for his health even while he is sicker at heart for his frustrated cause. With few allies such as his mentor, John Newton, a slave ship captain turned repentant priest who penned the great hymn, “Amazing Grace, Wilberforce fruitlessly fights both public indifference and a moneyed opposition determined to keep their exploitation safe. Nevertheless, Wilberforce finds the inspiration in newfound love to rejuvenate the fight with new ideas that would lead to a great victory for social justice.

Out to Lunch Bunch

November 18, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

It’s fun to stick around after Sunday worship, sipping coffee and chatting with your fellow Lakewood UCCers, right? But you don’t get much time to socialize before everyone goes their separate ways. So what’s the solution? Out-to-Lunch Bunch! Everyone is invited to join us after the service at a local restaurant as we eat a good meal and get to know each other better. This month we will be meeting at White Fence Farm in Lakewood. Contact: Marcia Forney.
