Save the date! In French, it’s “Mardi Gras.” In English it’s “Fat Tuesday”—traditionally the last day Christians could eat sugary, fatty foods before fasting for the season of Lent. Whether or not you’re fasting for Lent, join us in the Fellowship Hall as we continue this ancient tradition with our Fat Tuesday Pancake Supper. We’ll be using an “open house” format, with food served from 5:30 to a little before 7:00 p.m., so come whenever you can. Also, we’ll need people to help set up that night around 4:00 p.m.
After all the great conversations at the 2017 Women’s Retreat, we talked about starting a book club. Well, we have chosen a book and a date for the first meeting! The booked we picked is by Brené Brown and it’s called Braving the Wilderness. Brown is a research professor at the University of Houston. She has spent the past sixteen years studying courage, vulnerability, empathy, and shame, and is the author of four books: The Gifts of Imperfection, Daring Greatly, Rising Strong, and Braving the Wilderness. She also has some amazing Ted Talks! More details on the book club will be announced soon.
We are excited for the congregation to get to know Associate Pastor Candidate Mollie Landers Hatt and to welcome her to Lakewood UCC. There will be an open house at the church on Saturday, January 13, 2018 from 2:00-4:00 pm. We would love for our community to come say “hi” to Mollie, and get to know her a bit before the Congregational Vote on Sunday, January 14.
Our Men’s Ministry breakfast is an easy and fun way to get to know some of the other guys in the church. Once a month we gather at a local restaurant for breakfast to chat and deepen our relationships in a casual setting. We hope that you will plan on joining us. Restaurant: Sunrise-Sunset. Address for the restaurant is 1424 S Wadsworth, in Lakewood. Questions? Contact Daryl Foelske.
A-caroling we will go! Join us after worship as we visit our folks who are sick or shut in. This year, the hand bell ringers will accompany us at one of the venues too! It should be great family fun for all. Sign up on the Welcome Center, or contact Travis Kornegay for more information.
Join us for Christmas Eve worship! The service will be less than an hour long and is designed to be a casual, welcoming, and meaningful worship experience particularly geared toward families with younger children. We include lessons, carols, candlelight, a children’s sermon, and an “instant pageant” where children and adults can become part of the Christmas Story. Contact: Logan Bennett or Curt Preston.
Join us as we celebrate the birth of Christ with a traditional evening candlelight service and carols. We’ll start with a medley of Christmas songs at 7:00 pm., move into the service proper at 7:30 pm., and conclude with a candlelit Silent Night. Following the service, join us in the Fellowship Hall for hot cider and good conversation. Plan to arrive early, as this service is always packed!
Christmas is coming, and at Lakewood UCC, that can only mean one thing . . . it’s time for our annual Holiday Luncheon! Ladies of all ages are invited to join us in the Fellowship Hall for great food, a white elephant gift exchange, and more fun than anyone should be allowed to have at church. Bring a salad or dessert to share.
The Annual Advent Event is upon us! Let’s kick off the season on December 2 with a party! Come to Lakewood UCC to deck the halls (and the sanctuary). There will be holiday snacks for eating, holiday crafts for kids and adults alike, and plenty of holiday joy to share with one another. This is personally one of my favorite Lakewood UCC traditions. So join us for the Annual Advent Event as we enter this busy and beautiful season.
And if you a particularly arts/crafts-minded person, we can use your help! Please contact Logan if you are interested in supervising one of our craft tables. Instructions and materials will be provided in abundance, along with gratitude!
