Sermon Talkback returns by popular demand! We’ve scheduled another three-pack of talkbacks, on the last Sundays of October, November, and January. So, join us in the Conference Room after worship as we discuss the sermon we’ve just heard and what it means for our lives. And this month, as an added bonus, you can go straight from worship to talkback to Out-to-Lunch Bunch (see below). What more could you want from your Sunday?

Out-to-Lunch Bunch

When we lunch, we lunch in bunches! Join us after worship for some low-key, no-agenda hang-out time at Jose O’Shea’s (385 Union Blvd.). Just say you’re with Lakewood UCC when you arrive and you’ll be directed to our tables. Everyone is welcome! Contact: Karen Coiner, Len Ewald.

Because if you don’t, we’ll pick one for you. And you don’t want that. Contact: Logan Bennett, Jacob Liechty, Curt Preston.

If you know Family Promise (or its predecessor, Interfaith Hospitality Network), then you know they do amazing work providing food, shelter, and support services for homeless families. Last Spring, a bunch of us volunteered to be hosts, drivers, and meal servers for Family Promise at Lakewood United Methodist Church. Anyone who’s interested in helping with the Fall rotation is invited to sign up on the Welcome Center with name, phone, and email. Mike Dano, the coordinator at LUMC will then get in touch with you about available slots. Contact: Len Ewald.

It’s been a while since our last Adult Education offering, so we’re excited to announce that our CE Director, Jodi Bushdiecker, will be leading a class for three Mondays at the end of October and the beginning of November. Join us for a conversation about the role of the church in a changing world, based on a video series featuring some of the greats: NT Wright, Hannah Terry, Brian Zahnd, Walter Brueggemann, Richard Rohr, Rachel Held Evans, and Malcolm Guite. We’ll cover two videos per session, and each session stands alone. Come to as many or as few sessions as you want! If you need childcare, contact Jodi at least 3 days prior.

Power and Glory

October 18, 10:15 a.m.

James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came forward and said to Jesus, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” He said to them, “What is it you want me to do for you?” They said, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” But he said to them, “You do not know what you are asking.”
from Mark 10:35-45

This is a pretty gutsy move on the part of James and John, right? This is like if you marched up to the CEO of your company and said, “Hey, my brother and I want to be your Vice Presidents. Forever.” James and John don’t just want to be run-of-the-mill disciples. They want to be special, set apart, with an ownership stake in the Jesus revolution. They want to make sure they get a big slice of the pie when Jesus is finally in charge. And to all of this, Jesus says, “Sorry, but that’s not how it works . . .” Join us on Sunday as Pastor Curt preaches power, love, and standing at the back of the line.
