Sunday, June 17, 10:15 am

At first glance, the parable of the Mustard Seed is one of the shortest, simplest parables. Jesus tells the disciples that the Realm of God is like a small seed growing into a great shrub, providing a home for the birds of the air. The small is made great in God’s love, providing shade and rest for others. What are the mustard seeds in our lives? Whether the seeds that grow when we embrace our authentic self or the seed that grows when we live in community – how do we cultivate growth in ourselves and others? In light of Pride month and the pride parade, what messages of God’s transformative power still needs to be cultivated and grown? Join us in worship this Sunday, whether in the streets of the Pride parade or the pews of our sanctuary as Rev. Mollie preaches.

Sunday, June 10, 10:15 am

There are many stories of people being called by God in the Bible. We think of people like Isaiah, Jonah, and Moses at the burning bush. This Sunday we hear the story of the call of Samuel. We are told that “the word of the Lord was rare in those days; visions were not widespread.” And yet God’s call came not to a king or prince, not to a person of means or someone with persuasive powers, but to a young boy. Why would God pick Samuel to be a messenger of hope? Surely there must have been someone better or more qualified. Join us this Sunday as Pastor Curt preaches on God’s knack for using the gifts that most people overlook.

Remembering all dads!  Let’s honor all dads at our all-church Father’s Day Fellowship on Sunday, June 17.  Has your dad passed on?  What do you remember as his favorite snack or dessert? Or is he alive and well, ready to be indulged with his favorite treat? Please add a small note with your dad’s name and a special thought or the name of his treat.   They hold a special place in our hearts.

Having rules and following rules is important. While they may be annoying and frustrating at times, laws are one of the ways we govern our behaviors so that we can create a safe and mutually beneficial community together. But what about laws that are unjust? What about when laws do more harm than good? Jesus was a good and faithful Jewish man who understood the importance of keeping the law. But he also knew that sometimes breaking the rules was the only way to bring God’s desired healing and justice to the world. Join us this Sunday as Pastor Curt preaches on the love of the law and the law of love and how following Jesus sometimes means breaking the rules so that love can rule our hearts, our homes, and our communities.

The story of Nicodemus and Jesus’ interactions gives us much to ponder as Jesus challenges Nicodemus to move beyond his intellect to embodying his faith. Do we have to abandon our knowledge and intellect to live as Spirit-filled people?  Or is it an invitation to be challenged and stretched, living into what we cannot explain or define away? Is it an either/or, or a both/and? Join us in worship on Sunday as Rev. Mollie preaches on one of the most commonly used, and perhaps most misunderstood verses of the Bible.

Out to Lunch Bunch

It’s fun to stick around after Sunday worship, sipping coffee and chatting with your fellow Lakewood UCCers, right? But you don’t get much time to socialize before everyone goes their separate ways. So what’s the solution? Out-to-Lunch Bunch! Everyone is invited to join us after the service at a local restaurant as we eat a good meal and get to know each other better. This month we will be meeting at the Black-eyed Pea on Wadsworth. Contact: Marcia Forney.
