Be Opened

Mark 7:24-37

Believe it or not, Jesus wasn’t actually perfect. He was fully human and that fully human part of him occasionally messed things up. In today’s reading, he calls a woman a dog, right to her face. Not exactly the warm and fuzzy Jesus we like to imagine in our minds. But what’s beautiful about this interaction is that Jesus is the one who is changed by it. Jesus is the one who learns from his mistake and shifts course. Join us this Sunday as Pastor Curt preaches on the humanity of Jesus, the ways we all learn from our mistakes, and the call to remain open to the movements of the Holy Spirit so we can be transformed again and again.

Mark 7:24-37
Some churches seem to have a lot of rules. You have to be a member before you can serve in certain leadership roles. You have to attend a training before you can read scripture in church. You have to be confirmed or a member before you can receive communion. Back in Jesus’s day, there were a lot of rules too. But he didn’t seem to be a big fan following the rules. Join us this Sunday as Pastor Curt preaches on Jesus’s radical hospitality and how we seek to live into that same hospitality as well.

Confirmation Parent/Student Meeting

2018-2019 is a Confirmation year for Lakewood United Church of Christ!  If you are 8th grade or older and interested in going through the Confirmation program, please let Rev. Mollie (mollie@lakewooducc.com) know. The class will generally meet two Sundays a month either from 11:30 am until 1:00 pm, or from 6:00-8pm. (There will be no YAC on the dates when we meet in the evening). In addition to these sessions, there will be a few Sunday morning church visits to congregations in our area to experience and explore a variety of worship service. There may be an opportunity to attend a Confirmation Retreat sometime in the spring. Confirmation in our tradition is an exploration of contemporary and historic Christian teachings, with a goal of each Confirmand developing and articulating their personal beliefs. Confirmation will begin with a brief 20-30 minute Parent and Student meeting on September 16 after worship and the LaPunte trip meeting. Contact Rev. Mollie with questions.

Calling all YAC-ers who are in 7th grade and up to kick off our fall program year on Sunday, September 9. We’ll meet at our regular time of 6:30-8pm for games and time to reconnect after a summer of trips, camps, and other adventures. We’ll also spend a little time talking about our hopes for the 2018-2019 YAC year. Contact Rev. Mollie with any questions.
