We tend to think of Jesus as a gentle, lamb-holding, sage figure who wanders from town to town dispensing easily digestible wisdom. And sometimes this is who he is. But today’s reading offers another side of Jesus. He’s angry with Peter because Peter’s focus is on the short term, not the longer term. He needs his disciples to know that following him will bring difficulty and challenge. But also that it is worth it. Join us this Sunday as Pastor Curt preaches on the topsy-turvy kingdom of God and how sometimes losing is just what we need in order to find what we never knew we were missing.

We love to use the caterpillar turning into a butterfly as a metaphor for transformation. We start as one thing and through various processes, struggles, and events over time we become something else. But the butterfly was always a part of the caterpillar just as the caterpillar is still a part of the butterfly. Today we hear the story if Jesus becoming “transfigured” before a few disciples. What does that mean? And perhaps more importantly, what does it say about our own transformations? Join us this Sunday as Pastor Curt preaches on how we are all becoming someone new and how our faith can help us through the process of being transformed in Christ.

The ancient Israelites had a rough go of it for a while. Empire after empire came and conquered them. Life was hard. Surely they must have wondered why God was allowing this to happen. Enter the prophet, Isaiah. In chapter 40, Isaiah has some uplifting words for God’s people. Join us this Sunday as Pastor Curt preaches on how it is that we find strength in God when times are tough.

Since the very beginning, Christians have been trying to figure out how to live side by side with people of other faiths. Do we follow their customs? Encourage them to follow ours? Can we find a way to live our faith fully without diminishing the truths that others have found elsewhere? Join us this Sunday as Pastor Curt preaches on the challenges and blessings of being a Christian in an interfaith world.

When Jesus called the disciples, he didn’t call just one type of person. He called fishermen, a tax collector, and a religious fanatic among others. He welcomed folks from all walks of life into his inner circle. Jesus seems to have some wisdom about how best to build a community and a movement. Encouraging rich diversity within the group seems to be an important part of it. Join us this Sunday as Pastor Curt preaches on how diversity is an important part of the church and how it always has been.

Join us for a very exciting Sunday worship service where Associate Pastor Candidate Rev. Mollie Landers Hatt will be preaching. In John’s Gospel, we’ll read the story of the call of Philip and Nathanael who were invited to follow Jesus and “come and see” who this Jesus of Nazareth is. How do we respond to God’s call in our life? How do we respond to God’s call in the lives of others? We’ll explore God’s invitation in our lives and world today.

We tend to think of Mary as meek and mild. But the truth is she is anything but. It took her a few minutes to adjust to the news that she was going to be the means by which God would enter the world in a new way. But once she got over the shock, she boldly stepped forward with prophetic power. Join us this Sunday as we celebrate the 3rd Sunday of Advent with fearless joy at the coming of Christ at Christmas. #FearNot #Joy.

When Joseph learned Mary was pregnant his first thought was to “dismiss her quietly.” He didn’t want to expose her to unnecessary shame. But he didn’t want to marry her either. Then an angel came to him in a dream and said, “do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife.” This is week two of our Advent series #FearNot, with this week’s focus on peace. Where do we find it? How do we achieve it? What does peace look and feel like? Join us this Sunday as Pastor Curt preaches on finding peace in the midst of change, turmoil, and unrest. #FearNot #Peace
