Taizé-style worship comes to us from the Taizé community, an ecumenical Christian group based in France. Songs consist of simple, repeated phrases, and instead of a sermon, there’s an emphasis on contemplation and silence. Some describe it as a “massage for the soul.” Over the last couple years, this has become one of our most popular worship services. Everyone is invited to join us as we quiet our minds, still our hearts, and wait for the wind of God to blow among us.

“For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed.” from Romans 8:18-25

Hope is a powerful concept. It has inspired rebellions and revolutions. It strengthens us in waiting. It offers courage when things don’t seem to be going our way. But why do we hope? What’s the root of hope’s power? Join us this Sunday as Pastor Curt preaches on hope and despair, and why we wait patiently, but not passively, for the new thing God is birthing into the world.

“I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.” from Romans 7:15-20

We know right from wrong, don’t we? And yet, so often we choose the wrong despite ourselves. In Sunday’s lesson from the book of Romans, Paul talks about sin, knowing right but doing wrong. Join us this Sunday for worship as Pastor Curt preaches on weakness, strength, and the problem of sin. Don’t worry, there’s Good News!

“How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart?” from Psalm 13

Have you ever felt like God has gone on vacation and left no forwarding address? Have you ever cried out and gotten nothing but silence in return? If so, you are not alone. The practice of lament is as old as the Bible itself. This week Pastor Curt preaches on Psalm 13, a Psalm of Lament, and asks the question, “How can we believe in God and still be real about our anger, frustration, and sorrow with God?”

“I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves.” from Matthew 10:16-20
Jesus doesn’t always have warm and cuddling things to say to his disciples—then or now. In this Sunday’s reading, he compares the disciples to sheep being sent out among the wolves. But he also has a word of comfort and hope for them as well. This Sunday the Rev. Jerry Eslinger will preach about what it means to be both vulnerable and authentic as we seek to follow Jesus.

“Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” from Romans 5:1-5

According to the Apostle Paul, we are justified by faith and through Christ, we have access to God’s grace. But what does that really mean? And how do we make sense of the way that life’s challenges sometimes defeat us and sometimes strengthen us? Join us this Sunday as Pastor Curt preaches on faith, grace, and hope and the ripple effects of living from a place right relationship.

Join us this Sunday for a worship party of epic proportions. We’ll be celebrating the end of our Ministry Expansion Campaign. Both the bell and chancel choirs are doing their final numbers of the season. It’s a communion Sunday. And, it just so happens to be the day we celebrate the Holy Spirit coming to people as tongues of fire, descending like a dove at Pentecost. If it sounds like a party you want to join, it is.

“People of Athens…I walked around and looked carefully at your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: to an unknown god” from Acts 17:22-29

Back in the day of Paul, Athens was a bustling city where people of all different religious beliefs gathered. While teaching there, he noticed an altar dedicated, “To an unknown God.” He then tells the people about the God that he has come to know in Jesus Christ. How would you describe the God you know and worship? How do you live out your faith? What would you say if someone asked you, “why do you believe?” Join us this Sunday as Pastor Curt preaches on faith, doubt, and what it means to know God.

“I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. ” from John 17:20-23

Jesus prayed. He prayed a lot. He prayed alone and he prayed with others. This Sunday we hear of Jesus prayer for his disciples and for all whose lives would be changed by their witness. Come join us as we celebrate our 2017 Confirmands and reflect together on the unity and diversity of ever changing Body of Christ.
